Overview
A modern web portal for G-Remover — an automatic AI background removal tool powered by Next.js, Tailwind v4, Rust, and the u2netp ONNX model.
The Challenge
Existing web background removal tools are either locked behind steep paywalls, enforce aggressive file size limits, or process user uploads sluggishly with heavy server overhead.
The Solution
Designed a streamlined web application backed by an optimized Rust microservice running the lightweight u2netp ONNX machine learning model, delivering near-instant cutouts with high edge fidelity.
Technical Decisions
Rust + ONNX Runtime
Selected Rust for zero-cost abstractions, predictable memory footprint, and low-latency inference pipelines compared to heavy Python containers.
Client Edge Preprocessing
Handled dimension validation and compression on the client before upload, minimizing bandwidth and memory spikes during processing.
Key Features
- Automatic AI background removal
- High-performance Rust backend
- u2netp ONNX model integration
- Modern Next.js web portal
Key Outcomes
Sub-second background removal inference for standard portrait and product photography.
Zero cloud API fees by utilizing self-hosted open-weights ONNX models in Rust.
